Church’s Justice and Peace delegates call for pathways to nuclear disarmament

Justice and Peace Europe delegates called for pathways to nuclear disarmament during an international workshop and general assembly held in Glasgow from September 18 to 21, 2026. The gathering, hosted by Justice and Peace Scotland, brought together 40 delegates from national justice and peace commissions across Europe to discuss human security, the environmental consequences of nuclear weapons, and the economic aspects of disarmament.

The workshop participants studied alternatives to nuclear deterrence and the history of political action for disarmament. During the event, delegates visited the Faslane naval base on the Clyde to participate in a peace witness and a symbolic action organized with the Laudato Si’ Movement for the Season of Creation. The program drew inspiration from Pope Leo XIV’s call for an unarmed world.

During the assembly, Deacon Gary Carville from Ireland was elected as a new member of the Executive Committee of Justice and Peace Europe. The organization is co-presided over by Archbishop Antoine Hérouard of Dijon, France, and Maria Hammershøy of Denmark.
