COMUNICATO SUL CARCERE DI MASSA

The Diocese of Massa Carrara–Pontremoli issued a statement on September 19, 2026, addressing the overcrowding and staffing shortages at the Massa prison. The diocese noted that the facility currently holds 309 people despite having only 176 available places.

The diocese reported that the prison staff is reduced and largely composed of employees nearing retirement. According to the diocese, these conditions affect both the inmates and the workers. The statement noted that overcrowding prevents the implementation of training, work, and social programs intended to help inmates reintegrate into society. While the diocese highlighted existing programs like the textile mill and tailor shop as vital for providing dignity and skills, it urged for these activities to be expanded and supported.

To address these challenges, the diocese renewed its request for the appointment of a prison ombudsman. The diocese proposed this figure to act as a bridge between institutions and collaborate with prison administration to assist during this difficult period.
