Consiglio episcopale permanente Cei to discuss faith transmission

Bishops of the Permanent Episcopal Council of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI) met in Rome from September 21 to 23 to discuss how to transmit the faith in modern society. Led by President Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, the council addressed the need to ensure that even active members of the Church do not take their faith for granted.

The bishops stated that announcing Christ must involve closeness and listening rather than abstract concepts. To support this, they emphasized the importance of adult formation and renewed Christian initiation through prayer, the Word, and the Eucharist. The council also noted the role of laity in bringing Christian thought into public life and decision-making spaces.

The council decided to begin a process to identify criteria for a possible reform of the CEI Statute. This decision follows proposals made during the Cammino sinodale delle Chiese in Italia. In his opening remarks, Cardinal Zuppi recalled Pope Leo XIV's invitation to the May General Assembly to become a community more free to announce Christ.
