Pope Leo XIV will visit France from September 25 to 28, traveling to Paris, Saint-Denis, Lourdes, and Metz. The itinerary reflects differing priorities between French President Emmanuel Macron and the Vatican.

While President Macron sought a formal state visit featuring a military welcome, ceremonial displays, and an official banquet, the Vatican scaled back these elements. The Pope will stay at the apostolic nunciature in Paris rather than attending a state meal. Although the president will meet the Pope at the Élysée Palace on the first day and escort him to his aircraft on the final day, the trip lacks the grandeur typically associated with such visits.

The visit also highlights different objectives for the two parties. President Macron intends to discuss Europe, Ukraine, and the Middle East with the Pope. In contrast, French bishops hope to demonstrate a revitalized Church that is attracting thousands of young people. The Vatican has stated that these two perspectives should remain distinct.
