Custodio de Tierra Santa says the cross is not explained with words

Francesco Ielpo, the Custodian of the Holy Land, said that the cross cannot be explained through words but must be experienced by walking through it with Christ. Speaking at the monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana in Cantabria, Ielpo noted that Christian hope does not come from a promise of a life without suffering. Instead, he stated that hope is found in the certainty that Christ remains present during times of trial.

The remarks followed a ceremony linking the Holy Sepulchre with Santo Toribio de Liébana.
