Bishop Alberto Vera Aréjula recently shared updates regarding the potential sainthood of Sister Maria de Coppi, an Italian missionary who was killed in Mozambique in 2022. Sister Maria served the local community in Mozambique starting in 1963.

According to reports from Reuters and former Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, a group of rebels attacked the mission in the Nampula province. The attackers entered the premises and killed Sister Maria by shooting her in the head, along with 6 other people. The violence also involved the kidnapping of 3 individuals and the burning of dozens of homes in the Eráti and Memba districts.

Pope Francis previously recognized her death, calling for her witness to provide strength and courage to Christians and the people of Mozambique. Sister Maria was 84 years old at the time of her death.
