Catholic and Evangelical Churches in Germany support organ donation reform

German Catholic and Evangelical churches support a proposal to improve organ and tissue donation through the existing consent system. The churches favor an approach by a group of lawmakers, including Michael Brand, Lars Castellucci, Ates Gürpinar, and Kirsten Kappert-Gonther, to encourage more people to make personal, conscious decisions regarding donation and to make documenting those decisions easier.

The churches seek to strengthen donation rates without implementing an opt-out solution. This support comes ahead of the first debate on organ and tissue donation scheduled for September 24, 2026, in the German Bundestag.
