Danzica, trovata una vetrata del XIX secolo della Basilica di Santa Maria

Eighteen panels of a 19th-century stained glass window from the Basilica of Saint Mary have been found in St. Catherine's Church in Gdansk. The approximately 20-square-meter work was previously believed to have been destroyed during the war.

The discovery occurred during an inventory conducted by the Ufficio Voivodale per la Tutela dei Monumenti in collaboration with the Studio di Restauro Burzyński. The panels were identified after the contents of old storage boxes, which had been moved to St. Catherine's Church in the 1990s, were examined. The full composition was confirmed once the final panel was identified, which featured an inscription with the name of Franz Untrose Steffens, an influential 19th-century Gdansk family.

The stained glass depicts Christ, a kneeling woman, and two elderly people. Restorers currently believe the window was not dismantled during wartime restoration efforts but instead fell from a window. The panels were stored in broken boxes at the rimessa delle carrozze del Parco Oliwa following the war before being moved to the church. The panels will likely be returned to the Basilica of Saint Mary.
