Bishop Emeritus Heinz Josef Algermissen criticized how the Church has treated victims of abuse, stating that the institution looked at the victims too little for a long time. In an interview with the Fuldaer Zeitung, the 83-year-old former bishop of Fulda described the abuse cases as a large wound that remains even years later.

Algermissen served as the bishop of Fulda from 2001 to 2018, a period during which several cases of abuse became known. He was ordained as a bishop 30 years ago on September 21, 1996.
