Deacon Joseph Loungo, remembered for generosity, dies

Deacon Joseph W. Loungo Sr., 85, died on Sept. 15 after serving the faithful in Glassboro and Mullica Hill.

Deacon Loungo retired from active ministry in 2016 following nine years at Saint Bridget Parish in Glassboro. He continued serving there until 2019, when he moved to the Catholic Community of the Holy Spirit in Mullica Hill. He remained with the Mullica Hill community as retired clergy until last year.

Deacon Robert Fanelli, who was ordained alongside Loungo by Bishop James T. McHugh on March 15, 1997, described Loungo as a kind man who loved his role. Fanelli noted that Loungo was a skilled carpenter who used his craft to make items like birdhouses for others. Born in Camden to Anthony and Anna Loungo, he was raised in Audubon Park and served in the U.S. Army with the 30th Artillery Brigade, Air Defense.
