Digital Culture: Towards Effective Inculturation

Bishop Lucio Ruiz invited religious members to treat digital culture as a specific space for mission and evangelization during a webinar on Friday, October 23, 2026. The event brought together approximately 380 participants involved in communication and digital mission from around the world.

The former Secretary of the Dicastery for Communication described the digital world as a distinct environment with its own language and culture rather than just a tool for sending messages. Ruiz stated that digital missionaries should use these spaces to meet, engage, and dialogue with younger generations. He suggested that this approach requires a renewed pastoral ministry to help young people find meaning and discern their vocations within their digital lives.

Ruiz noted that the Church should reach people where they are to share the spirituality of religious communities. He characterized digital mission as a way to translate the Gospel into modern cultural language and emphasized that the work involves more than just using technology, but rather creating spaces for encounter.
