Diocese Mourns the Passing of Archbishop Robert Rivas, O.P.

Archbishop Robert Rivas, O.P., Archbishop Emeritus of Castries, died peacefully in his sleep at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, the Antilles Episcopal Conference announced.

Born in Trinidad and Tobago on June 7, 1946, Rivas was ordained a Dominican priest in 1971. He served the Church in Trinidad and Tobago before becoming the first bishop of Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, in 1990. He also served as the Apostolic Administrator of Bridgetown, Barbados, before his time in Castries.

Bishop Robert Llanos and the clergy of the Diocese of Saint John's-Basseterre issued a tribute mourning the death of the archbishop and offering prayers for his family, the Dominican Order, and the people of the Archdiocese of Castries.
