Diocese of Caetité promotes formation for agents on AI use in Church

Catholic Intelligence1 min read

The Diocese of Caetité held a training session for agents on how to use artificial intelligence within the Church. The meeting, organized by the diocesan Pascom, took place on Saturday, September 12, at the São Joaquim Diocesan Pastoral Center in Caetité.

More than 60 agents representing 34 parishes attended the event. Father Igor Gonçalves, an ecclesiastical assistant for Pascom in the Diocese of Camaçari and a professor at the Catholic University of Salvador, led the training. He discussed the challenges of using AI and how to use the technology without losing the intelligence of the Gospel.

Father Gonçalves explained that generative AI works by recomposing patterns from internet data rather than possessing local knowledge. He noted that AI does not know specific local figures, such as Dom Carvalho or the priests, and instead produces statistical averages. The training included instruction on how to use AI tools to produce results without distortions of images and reality.
