Diocese of Lugo celebrates 100 years of Domund

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

The Diocese of Lugo marked the centenary of World Mission Sunday, known as Domund, on October 18. Under the theme "One in Christ, united in mission," the diocese joined the global Church in recognizing a century of missionary work.

Pope Pius XI established World Mission Sunday in 1926 to encourage Catholics to support mission territories through prayer and financial contributions. Since its inception, the Catholic population in mission territories has grown from approximately 9.6 million to nearly 347 million people. There are currently 1,133 mission territories located across 138 countries.

The Diocese of Lugo has participated in this history through generations of priests, religious men and women, and laypeople dedicated to missionary work. The diocese noted a shift in the missionary landscape, as many communities that once relied on incoming missionaries now send their own priests and religious to serve other dioceses, including Lugo.
