Diocese of Málaga begins drilling and injections to improve Sagrario church ground

The Diocese of Málaga will begin drilling and cement injections on Monday to stabilize the ground beneath the Sagrario church. This work is a new phase of a project started in 2016 after a large crack appeared in the building.

The diocese plans to perform approximately 150 treatment operations inside and outside the church. Workers will use small diameter drill holes to insert steel tubes with valves, allowing them to inject cement grout at controlled depths to strengthen the soil. These drillings may reach depths of nearly 19 meters and will use various angles to meet structural needs and subsoil conditions.

The project aims to improve the soil's load-bearing capacity and prevent the building from sinking or shifting. Recent archaeological work near and under the church has also influenced how the diocese carries out these repairs.
