Diocese of Saint-Etienne presents liturgical vestments exhibition

The Diocese of Saint-Etienne held an exhibition of liturgical vestments and objects at the church in Saint-Médard-en-Forez on Saturday, September 19. The event included a guided tour of the village and the church.

Christiane Jakob presented the history of the items, which were displayed across 4 chapels: the baptistery chapel, the confessional chapel, the Blessed Sacrament chapel, and a 4th chapel. The displayed vestments, made from materials such as silk, satin, velvet, lace, and gold or silver thread, likely date from the early twentieth century. Jakob noted that the piece shown in the baptistery chapel specifically dates to the first quarter of the twentieth century, while the age of the other items is still being determined.

The exhibition highlighted the textile artistry of the pieces, which were produced by religious workshops, specialized houses, or individual artisans. Jakob explained the meaning behind the specific colors, shapes, and embroidered patterns used in the garments.
