Duka Gempa Flores, Vikep Labuan Bajo Imbau Umat Sederhanakan Pesta Komuni Pertama

The Labuan Bajo Vicariate is urging the faithful to simplify First Communion celebrations following the earthquake that struck Flores. In a pastoral appeal issued on September 22, 2026, Yuvens Rugi asked parents of students receiving their First Communion to reconsider large celebratory parties to show solidarity with those affected by the disaster.

This request follows guidance from the Diocese of Labuan Bajo and the Manggarai Barat government regarding earthquake recovery. The vicariate noted that tens of thousands of people have been affected, with many losing homes, schools, churches, and family members. Many victims remain in emergency tents and face long-term trauma.

The appeal emphasizes that while food, money, and medical aid are arriving from various regions, local moral empathy and community togetherness are crucial. Because the threat of aftershocks may continue for several months, the vicariate encourages the community to share in the collective grief of the victims.
