Pope Benedict XVI began a pilgrimage in Paris on September 12, 2008, to mark the 150th anniversary of the apparitions at Lourdes. Vatican News reports that during this trip, the theologian combined a tribute to French culture with the teachings of Saint Augustine, the author of The City of God.

This historical visit shares a similar interest in Saint Augustine with the current Pope, who is scheduled to travel to France on September 25.
