EWTN names Ursula Murua to succeed Montse Alvarado as head of EWTN News

EWTN Global Catholic Network named Ursula Murua as the next president of EWTN News, effective Nov. 1. Murua, who currently serves as the director of digital strategy and social media for the news division, succeeds Montse Alvarado.

Alvarado has served as president and chief operating officer of EWTN News since 2023. She will transition to a new role after Pope Leo XIV appointed her in June as the prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication.

In a message to staff, EWTN Chairman of the Board and CEO Michael P. Warsaw noted that Murua's career in Catholic media spans more than 30 years. Warsaw highlighted a connection to the network's foundress, Mother Angelica, noting that Murua began her journalism career at age 20 by covering a lecture given by Mother Angelica in Peru.

Murua has held various leadership roles across digital, editorial, and broadcast operations at EWTN, including work with the Spanish-language newscast EWTN Noticias. She previously led digital coverage for several major Church events, including 3 papal conclaves, World Youth Days, and various synods.
