Father Rich Tomkosky writes on living humbly

Father Rich Tomkosky wrote that practicing humility is a daily struggle for humans because pride is the primary effect of original sin. Writing for the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, Tomkosky noted that modern attitudes regarding respect and refusing to back down can lead to spiritual disaster and the destruction of the common good.

Tomkosky described humility as recognizing a person's dependence on God through trust, surrender, and joy. He cited Saint Paul’s teachings and the example of Jesus, who emptied himself to take the form of a servant. To grow in this virtue, Tomkosky suggested that people must pray daily for the gift of humility and adopt the mindset of Saint John the Baptist, who stated that Jesus must increase while he must decrease.
