Fatima to keep Rupnik mosaic despite possible 2027 papal visit

The Sanctuary of Fátima in Portugal will not remove or cover its large mosaic created by Father Marko Rupnik. While some churches and shrines worldwide have begun covering artwork by the priest, Fátima leaders stated last year that they are not considering removal. The shrine issued a statement condemning the acts committed by Rupnik and expressing solidarity with his victims.

Some Portuguese Church leaders told The Pillar that they believe Rupnik's art should be judged separately from the man himself. This decision comes as the shrine faces potential questions regarding the artwork due to a possible papal visit to Fátima in 2027.

Rupnik, who was expelled from the Jesuits in 2023, is currently on trial in the Vatican. He faces accusations of sexual, spiritual, and psychological abuse involving dozens of women. Some allegations suggest that some instances of abuse occurred during the creation of his artwork.
