Finding Forgiveness Through the Experience of Mercy – A Homily for the 24th Sunday of the Year

Msgr. Charles Pope explained that forgiveness is a gift from God rather than a human effort when discussing the Gospel for the 24th Sunday of the Year. In his homily, Pope noted that many people struggle to forgive those who have caused them harm or fear that forgiving makes them vulnerable to further injury.

Pope addressed the biblical exchange between Peter and Jesus, where Peter asked if forgiving a brother seven times was sufficient. He explained that Jesus' response to forgive seventy-seven times signifies that mercy and forgiveness should have no limits.

According to Pope, true forgiveness flows from a heart moved by the realization of God's own mercy. He stated that people do not find the capacity to forgive through their own strength, but rather through the grace offered by the Lord.
