The Catholic Church in France is transitioning from a majority institution to a minority community based on personal choice and intense faith, according to a report by Więź. While only about 2 percent of the population attends Sunday Mass and the number of priests and consecrated persons is declining, the Church maintains a capacity for renewal and new models of community life.

This shift involves moving away from a mass, inherited faith toward strong communities and centers capable of intellectual dialogue with modern culture. These new forms of communal life and the ability to attract young people may serve as a model for Catholicism in other European countries.

An apostolic visit is scheduled for September 25–28. The French bishops expect the visit to provide spiritual strengthening and a renewal of the Church's missionary efforts.
