Lama Zopa Rinpoche opens animal sanctuary in Nepal

Lama Zopa Rinpoche has opened a new animal sanctuary in Sindhupalchok, Nepal, to protect animals from suffering and slaughter. Rescued cows, buffaloes, and goats moved into newly completed shelters on a 25-acre property on July 8, 2026.

The sanctuary near Kopan Monastery was established to address overcrowding at previous locations. According to the FPMT, the facility provides a safe environment where animals are exposed to the Dharma through hearing mantras and encountering holy objects. Lama Zopa Rinpoche taught that these connections help beings avoid lower rebirths and create causes for future happiness.
