António Guterres called for investing in peace during the International Day of Peace on September 21. The United Nations chose the theme "Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day" to encourage viewing peace as a daily investment in security, rights, and development rather than just the absence of war.

Guterres issued this call as international tensions rise and global solidarity weakens. Data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute shows that global military spending reached 2.887 billion dollars in 2025, marking a 2.9% increase from 2024 and the eleventh consecutive year of growth.

Between 2016 and 2025, total global military spending rose by 41%. Europe saw a 14% increase in spending in 2025, while Asia and Oceania saw an 8.1% increase. The United States, China, and Russia accounted for 51% of all global military spending, totaling approximately 1.480 billion dollars.
