“God’s mercy is greater than our failures,” Catholic Archbishop Urges Nigerians to Embrace Conversion

Archbishop Ignatius Ayau Kaigama of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja urged Nigerians to practice humility, repentance, and genuine conversion during a homily at St. Matthew’s Karmo Parish on September 27.

Kaigama told the congregation that recognizing wrongdoing and seeking forgiveness requires humility. He stated that God’s mercy exceeds human failure when people sincerely turn back to Him. Reflecting on the Gospel of Matthew, the archbishop said Christians must demonstrate their response to God through actions rather than just words.

He used the example of the first son from the Gospel to illustrate conversion, noting that the son changed his mind and went after initially refusing his father. Kaigama explained that true conversion involves self-emptying, avoiding pride and selfishness, and seeking the good of all. He added that the first step in this process is becoming dissatisfied with sinful behavior.
