Gunmen kill six at Greek Orthodox church in Jordan
Gunmen killed at least six people and injured between 27 and 28 others during a shooting at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in the town of Hmoud, located in the Karak governorate of Jordan.
The attack occurred during a funeral attended by members of the Orthodox, Catholic, and Muslim communities. According to Khaled Burqan, a mourner who spoke to the state-run television station al-Mamlaka, two gunmen armed with a rifle and a pistol fired inside the church for several minutes. However, footage aired by al-Mamlaka appeared to show three gunmen involved in the shooting. Government spokesperson Dr. al-Momani Mohammad described the attack as heinous, and no group has claimed responsibility.
King Abdullah II stated that authorities would confront the act with the harshest penalties. He noted that the attack would not divide the unity of Jordanians. The prime minister is scheduled to chair a security council with all ministers present, and officials from the interior ministry are expected to hold a news briefing.
