Theologian Thomas Söding argues that the prohibition against women becoming priests or bishops in the Catholic Church cannot be derived from biblical texts. Speaking in Munich on Friday, the Bochum biblical scholar described the central argument used to oppose women's ordination as detached.

Söding stated that the claim that Jesus Christ can only be represented in these roles by a man has nothing to do with the text.
