Heilige und Sexsymbol / Große Maria-Magdalena-Ausstellung findet in Frankfurt statt

A large exhibition about Mary Magdalene is taking place in Frankfurt. The exhibition explores the complex identity of the biblical figure, who is often depicted in classical art with long, flowing hair or holding a skull.

The display examines the tension between different perceptions of her life. While she is recognized as a courageous companion of Jesus Christ who followed him to the crucifixion and was reportedly the first person to see him after his resurrection, she is also frequently portrayed through the lens of a former prostitute and sinner. This perception stems from historical traditions that merged her identity with an unnamed sinner who anointed the feet of Jesus.
