Father Eric de Beukelaer paid tribute to Father Hughes of La Villegeorges following the priest's unexpected death this summer. Father Hughes died at age 66 due to heart failure.

De Beukelaer described the deceased priest as a cultured, generous, and unconventional figure who was well known at the Louvain seminary. In a 2018 video from the Diocese of Pontoise, Father Hughes stated that being a priest is the most beautiful job in the world.
