How England’s Assisted-Suicide Bill Was Defeated

The British House of Commons rejected a bill on assisted suicide for terminally ill adults during a second reading on September 11. The proposal failed with 286 votes against and 270 votes in favor.

Thomas Ward, president of the John Paul II Academy for Human Life and the Family, welcomed the decision, stating that physician-assisted suicide is an affront to God and a violation of human dignity. Ward noted that there are no circumstances where it is legitimate to take the life of an innocent human being.

The defeat followed parliamentary scrutiny, grassroots mobilization, and prayer. Opponents of the law included doctors, people with disabilities, bishops, and members of parliament from various political sides. Concerns raised during the process included the potential threat to vulnerable people and the issue of underfunded end-of-life care.
