How Habitat for Humanity’s ‘Catholic Coalition’ is helping Palisades rebuild
Habitat for Humanity LA organized a four-day community build from Sept. 22 to 25 to assist wildfire survivors in Pacific Palisades who lack the resources to rebuild. Approximately 500 volunteers participated in the event, many of whom were members of the Habitat for Humanity LA Catholic Coalition. This group includes members of 16 Catholic parishes, local Knights of Columbus councils, and Loyola High School.
The build event supports residents displaced by the Palisades Fire. Homeowners in the Pacific Palisades and Malibu area often face a gap of more than $1 million between rebuilding costs and insurance coverage.
Chris Untiet, the faith relations director for Habitat LA, said the coalition played a big part in making the build possible and that the event served as a way for LA to rally together for wildfire relief. Volunteers included members from St. Monica Church in Santa Monica and Corpus Christi Church, which was destroyed during the fire.
