How popes have faced France’s brand of Church-State separation

Pope Pius X rejected the concept of separating the Church from the State in a 1906 statement. Writing a few months after France officially implemented its model of secularism, known as laïcité, the Pope described the idea of state and Church separation as a false and harmful error. This French policy of secularity traces its origins back to the French Revolution.
