Igreja/Portugal: «A melhor escola» para os padres e bispos é a «experiência paroquial» – D. Vitorino Soares

Bishop Vitorino Soares stated that parish experience serves as the best school for both priests and bishops following his installation as the new bishop of Algarve. Speaking to journalists at the Faro Cathedral on September 19, 2026, Soares expressed his intention to be a pastor of proximity by visiting parishes, meeting local communities, and working closely with parish priests.

During his entrance homily, Soares identified unity and communion as essential pillars for the Church, warning that without them, the Church would lack a heart. He noted that the Algarve region experiences a significant increase in population during the summer and said he wants the Church to support these people so they do not feel like mere tourists or feel abandoned.

Regarding the local political landscape, Soares said he is less concerned with election results than with whether leaders are attentive to the needs and difficulties of the people. He also addressed the issue of hopelessness, noting that it often stems from isolation and old age.
