Il Canada non entrerà nel menù europeo

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed making Canada the first associated member of the European Union, according to Tempi. The announcement occurred during a speech on the State of the Union at the European Parliament on Thursday.

The proposal faces uncertainty because European treaties do not currently include a provision for an associated member status. Von der Leyen did not share the idea with others before the announcement, and the member states who hold the final decision-making power are not all in agreement.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney attended the speech as a guest. Carney previously gained international attention in January 2026 at the Davos Economic Forum when he criticized Donald Trump and spoke about the decline of the international liberal order.
