The Vatican approved the appointment of Paul Liu Honggang as the bishop of Datong, despite his history of promoting communist ideology and participating in Maoist political reeducation. According to an article by Luigi Casalini published in The Remnant and translated by Messainlatino.it, Liu Honggang was consecrated on August 31.

The appointment followed a process where the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association unilaterally elected Liu on April 28. Pope Leo XIV later formalized the nomination on August 10. Casalini claims this sequence illustrates a pattern where Beijing selects candidates and Rome ratifies them.

The report alleges that Liu Honggang has rejected complaints regarding the persecution of faithful members within his own diocese. Casalini describes the consecration as evidence that the agreement between the Vatican and China has failed to prevent the communist regime from choosing its own religious leaders.
