Immersion to Country with Catholic Mission
Nine students and two staff members from St Paul’s College in Gilles Plains traveled through the South Australian outback on an immersion trip organized by Catholic Mission. Led by facilitator Tony Johnston, the group traveled from Adelaide through the Flinders Ranges into the far north of the state to engage with First Nations cultures and communities.
During the trip, the group visited Adnyamathanha Country at Iga Warta. There, cultural educator Terrance Coulthard shared stories and knowledge regarding his connection to the land. Students participated in an Ochre Ceremony and explored the significance of local ochre pits.
The program encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones to learn about the traditions and experiences of the remote communities they encountered. According to The Southern Cross, the journey provided students with opportunities to reflect on their roles in building a more reconciled and respectful Australia.
