Father Felix Anthony warns of multidimensional conflict in Manipur
Father Felix Anthony, the secretary for social communications for the Diocese of Miao, said the conflict in Manipur has evolved into a multidimensional struggle with no visible solution. Speaking to Fides News Agency, Anthony noted that the violence, which has persisted for four years, is worsening as divisions and polarization deepen. He reported that most attacks target innocent women and villagers.
The conflict began in May 2023 between the Meitei majority and the Kuki tribal minority, but has since expanded to include the Naga ethnic group. According to LiCAS News, shootings in the Kamjong, Ukhrul, and Kangpokpi hill districts killed at least nine civilians during the first half of October.
The unrest has resulted in approximately 260 deaths, the destruction of hundreds of churches, and the displacement of more than 60,000 people within the state. In response to the violence, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh ordered more security forces to sensitive areas. Local rebel groups also held a general strike on October 15.
