Indian Ocean Catholic Bishops Commit to Renewed Synodal Journey Amid Social and Pastoral Challenges

Catholic bishops from the Indian Ocean region have pledged to prioritize a synodal way of life to address growing social and pastoral difficulties. In a collective message released Wednesday, September 9, following their 37th Plenary Assembly in the Catholic Diocese of Port Louis in Mauritius, members of the Episcopal Conference of the Indian Ocean (CEDOI) called for renewed pastoral care to help communities facing various crises.

The bishops identified several major challenges, including weakening family and social ties, economic insecurity, and difficulties in passing on the Christian faith to younger generations. They also expressed concern regarding migration, ecological issues, and addictions affecting young people.

To respond to these realities, CEDOI members stated that the Church must become a community that cares by practicing attentive listening, discernment, and pastoral accompaniment. The bishops noted that these issues require more than institutional responses and emphasized the need to listen to the experiences of those affected to find concrete ways to support them.
