Infanta Church group renews call for Sierra Madre protection

The Social Action Center of the Prelature of Infanta renewed its call on Saturday to protect the Sierra Madre mountain range during Sierra Madre Day observances in Infanta, Quezon.

The group stated that development should not cause environmental destruction, loss of livelihoods, or violations of the rights of Indigenous communities. While the center is not opposed to development, it urged government agencies to prioritize public safety and environmental protection.

The Social Action Center called for independent scientific assessments regarding quarrying, wind projects, the Kaliwa Dam, and other major developments affecting forests, rivers, and biodiversity. The group also advocated for the rights of Dumagat communities, stating these Indigenous people should be respected as environmental stewards rather than treated as obstacles to progress.
