Innovation Drives Mission at St. Mary’s Springs Academy

St. Mary’s Springs Academy in Fond du Lac uses a specialized academic term to provide students with real-world learning experiences. Four years ago, Principal Eamonn O’Keeffe and Melissa Trepte, the director of institutional effectiveness, curriculum and instruction, redesigned the school calendar to include the J-Term.

The J-Term begins in January following Christmas break and lasts approximately two and a half weeks. During this period, every student enrolls in a single half-credit course that differs from standard high school subjects. According to Ed Foy of the Catholic Herald, the program focuses on project-based learning, interdisciplinary exploration, community connections, and service. This structure allows teachers to offer unique courses that do not fit into the regular academic schedule.
