Insecurity Disrupting Pastoral, Social Activities at Catholic Parish in Eastern DR Congo

Armed groups operating in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are disrupting pastoral and social activities at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Kahamba Parish, according to parish leaders. During a parish council meeting on August 30, Kambale Emmanuel, the president of the parish council, stated that regular clashes between several armed groups prevent the community from developing properly.

The parish council reported that at least 7 armed groups operate within the parish territory, including 6 Wazalendo groups and 1 camp of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC). Parish council members noted that peaceful civilians suffer the consequences when these groups clash.

The insecurity is also affecting education, as parents move their children to urban areas or other locations to find safety. The outgoing parish priest, Fr. Muhindo Mathe François, said that while the newly established parish is growing, the presence of armed groups affects the social and pastoral lives of the faithful.
