Januarius celebrated in Naples

Faithful in Naples gather at the Naples Cathedral on September 19 to celebrate the feast of St. Januarius, the 4th-century bishop and martyr.

The celebration includes a solemn Mass where the relics of his blood, contained in small glass vials, are displayed. This tradition of observing the liquefaction of his blood has continued for centuries and remains a central part of the feast for the patron saint of Naples and one of the most venerated saints in southern Italy.
