The Pope's comments follow the news that the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, a former major convicted of killing 13 people and wounding 32 others during a shooting at Fort Hood 18 years ago, will be televised.

The execution is scheduled for December 3 at the site of the crime. This will be the first execution by firing squad in the United States since 1945, as military executions were previously carried out by hanging.

The debate over capital punishment has intensified following a failed execution in Tennessee, where 50-year-old Christy Pike survived after receiving two doses of a lethal injection. That incident led to a temporary suspension of death penalty applications in the state.
