Major Gustavus Henry March-Phillipps died during a raid on the Normandy coast on the night of September 11, 1942. The mission, codenamed Aquatint, faced difficulties when currents drifted boats several kilometers from the landing site. Upon reaching the shore, the unit encountered a patrol and came under fire. March-Phillipps died at age 34 while attempting to retreat with a damaged boat.

March-Phillipps attended Ampleforth College starting at age nine. Former classmates described him as having a volatile temperament and a need for action rather than academic diligence, but noted the school shaped his faith and his commitment to ideals such as honor, courage, and service. After school, he attended the Academy in Woolwich and served in the artillery.
