Australian marine scientists reported in their annual report that coral cover across most of the Great Barrier Reef has remained stable or increased. The last five years represent the best period of coral cover recorded during the years scientists have measured it systematically.

The data contradicts previous predictions of the reef's disappearance. In 2012, researchers suggested the reef had lost half its coral since the mid-1980s and predicted another halving by 2022. Other media outlets also published reports declaring the reef dead in 2014 and 2016.

Coral cover reached levels higher than any recorded since measurements began in 1986 by 2021. These unprecedented levels continued through 2022 and 2023, with the reef reaching a new historical maximum in 2024.
