Bishop Robert Mutsaerts, auxiliary bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch, identified the current crisis facing the Catholic Church as a lack of internal certainty regarding fundamental doctrines.

Speaking on September 16, 2026, Mutsaerts noted that while the Church has survived historical challenges such as corruption, schisms, and persecutions, the present situation is grave due to uncertainty over core teachings. He stated that the crisis does not stem from a lack of popularity or a failure to appeal to modern consumers, but rather from confusion regarding the definitions of truth, sin, marriage, the priesthood, liturgy, obedience, and mercy. He also questioned whether the Church is clear on what Christ actually entrusted to it.
