Marco Bernardoni argues that Vito Mancuso’s theological writings and lectures incorrectly redefine the resurrection of Jesus as a purely internal experience rather than a historical event. According to Bernardoni, Mancuso aligns himself with the critical rationalism of Gerd Lüdemann and David Friedrich Strauss by suggesting that the resurrection is not a physical reality involving a reanimated body. Instead, Mancuso presents it as a symbolic idea of faith and a moral feeling that arises from a person's communion with God.

Bernardoni claims this perspective makes a historical and an ontological error. He writes that Mancuso’s view reduces the event to a psychological process of grieving. Bernardoni states that the resurrection is an objective and real intrusion of a new creation into history, rather than a psychological projection.
