Leão XIV: Razões da reforma litúrgica

Pope Leo XIV addressed the reasons for liturgical reform during two Wednesday general audience catecheses held on 27/05/26 and 26/08/26. The sessions focused on the document Sacrosanctum Concilium.

During the first session, the Pope discussed the relationship between tradition and progress. He used a metaphor from Benedict XVI, describing tradition as a river that contains its source and flows toward its mouth. He also referenced Mediator Dei to describe the Church as a living organism that grows and adapts its liturgy to changing times while remaining firm in its principles.

The Pope explained that the Council aimed to renew the Church by adapting institutions capable of change. He noted that because the liturgy communicates the mystery of Christ through the rites and prayers of the Church, these elements are subject to human changes rather than being entirely immutable.
