Liechtenstein's parliament votes 13-12 to permit abortion

Liechtenstein's parliament voted 13-12 to allow abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. In a separate 13-12 vote, lawmakers decided not to permit a public referendum on the measure.

Hereditary Prince Alois, who manages day-to-day governing duties for Prince Hans Adam II, previously stated he would veto the law.

Bishop Benno Elbs, the apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Vaduz, said the unborn child has an inherent dignity from the beginning and deserves the same protection as every human life. He also expressed a desire for a society where every child is welcomed and parents receive the support necessary to make decisions for their children. The nation of 41,000 people currently lacks a maternity ward.
